The Blind Sensorium exhibition - The paradox of the Anthropocene is one of the four great exhibitions of the Matera 2019 programme, and it will present the artistic research started by the artist Armin Linke in 2013, commissioned by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, and then developed in collaboration with international artistic and scientific institutions.

The exhibition will investigate the role of those scientific and political institutions that negotiate geology, atmosphere and oceans, and in particular will examine the consequences of the climatic changes caused by man on the land and in the biosphere. Today the tangible impact, great capacity, and speed of these changes have given life to a strong debate centred on the presumed start of a new geological era after the Holocene, proposed initially in the 1980s by Paul Crutzen, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry.

The exhibition, by the photographer and film maker Armin Linke, covers the story of climatic change and its causes, through projections, photographs, documents, interviews, on-site territorial analyses and research, carried out also in Matera and Basilicata. A series of experts, agencies and specialist international organisations will contribute to the exhibition on the contemporary scientific research carried out on these themes. The results of this research will be collected, recorded, assessed, analysed, archived and redistributed to generate an archive in the exhibition. Videos, interviews and documentaries will illustrate and transform the contemporary debate on the environment and its rapid transformation.

Blind Sensorium will explore the spaces of continuity: from the beginnings of the Holocene of primitive European life that developed in the shadow of the Sassi district, to current scientific explorations involving observation of the Earth.
