The Collettivo Edison Studio returns to Matera with another important part of its acoustic silent cinema experiment. There will be a screening of Dante's Inferno (1911) by Adolfo Padovan and Francesco Bertolini in the enchanting surroundings of Casa Cava, with a new soundtrack performed live by four members of the Edison Studio: Mauro Cardi, Luigi Ceccarelli, Fabio Cifariello Ciardi and Alessandro Cipriani.

Dante's Inferno was the first truly full-length feature film in the history of Italian cinema. It was an unprecedented blockbuster based on the text of the first Canticle of the Divine Comedy and Gustav Doré's celebrated Dantean engravings. It took three years to shoot, and involved 150 actors and extras, 100 different scenes and a massive publicity campaign. It was distributed across Europe and the United States.

Hordes of bat-demons with pointed forks, hosts of pure souls from paradise floating in the sky, Paolo and Francesca gliding from above, flying suspended in the air, a gigantic Lucifer-Fireater who devours diaphanous, transparent corpses. A visionary film interwoven with an intense, modern soundtrack composed by Edison Studio.

*Commissioned by Ravenna Festival, restoration by the Cineteca di Bologna. With support from SIAE 'modern classics'.
