Il Purgatorio is the canticle of starting anew. Can we start again after a failure, a defeat or a disappointment? Can we rid our mouths of that bitter taste of death and rediscover a taste for life? Can we smile after the anxiety that has torn our heart apart with its tentacles until it almost stops? Can we escape from the inferno our existence has become? Of course we can. It is like returning to elementary school and learning a new language. We have looked through the catalogue of horrors, we have peered into the darkness of the evil faces that are our own, and now we are learning the alphabet of compassion. This is why Dante's Purgatorio begins at dawn, with the sky a colour painted by one of the most beautiful verses of the entire Commedia: 'Sweet colour of the oriental sapphire'. The interminable night has ended. Blue follows the darkness. Wake early everyone, and go to school. Before Dante is a parade of penitents, pupils and teachers at one and the same time. They put Dante and the reader and themselves on a path towards a new life. 'Purgatorio' is the canticle of ‘us’, of the choirs who sing of their happiness, of ascending together.
'Perceive ye not that we are worms, designed to form the angelic butterfly?'

Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari.
