James Conlon has been the Principal Conductor of the Italian RAI National Symphony Orchestra since 2016. He is also the Music Director of Los Angeles Opera and Music Director of the Cincinnati May Festival. He was Music Director at the Ravinia Festival, Principal Conductor of the Paris Opera, General Music Director of the City of Cologne, Germany, where he simultaneously led the Gürzenich Orchestra and Cologne Opera, as well as Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. Since his debut, he has conducted more than 270 performances at the Metropolitan Opera of New York. He has also conducted at the Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Royal Opera House in London, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro Real (Madrid) Teatro Mariinskij in Saint Petersburg and the Vienna State Opera (Staatsoper).
Conlon has recorded extensively for the Bridge, Capriccio, Decca, EMI, Erato and Sony Classical labels. He has won four Grammy Awards.
During his career, he has earned many prestigious awards and recently has been listed in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
The RAI National Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1994. Thanks to its concerts, which have been broadcast on radio and television channels, it has contributed to a wider dissemination of its huge historical, musical and artistic repertoire. Its concerts and premieres have earned prestigious awards from art critics, publishers and labels. The Orchestra performs regular concerts in Turin and, since 2013, has been involved in the summer music festivals organised by the city of Turin. Furthermore, it often participates as guest in important Italian festival, including the MITO SettembreMusica, Biennale di Venezia, Ravenna Festival, Festival Verdi in Parma and Sagra Malatestiana in Rimini.
Among the institutional events, it is worth mentioning the Christmas concerts held in Assisi and broadcast worldwide, and the celebrations taking place on the Italian National Day and Republic Day, the 2nd June.
The Orchestra is also involved in many prestigious initiatives abroad. In addition to the international tours (Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Canary Islands, South America, Switzerland, Austria and Greece) and the invitation in 2006 to the Festival of Salzburg and the Philharmonie of Berlin, in 2011 it performed in the United Arab Emirates during the Abu Dhabi Classic, and in Germany, Austria and Slovakia, making its debut at the Musikverein in Vienna. It also played at the RadiRO Festival in Bucharest, in 2012, and the Enescu Festival in 2013. Finally, in December 2016 it performed the Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven at the Royal Opera House of Muscat (Oman). In August 2017, it made its debut as main orchestra at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and, in October 2017, at the Konzerthaus in Vienna.


**ATTENTION: It will not be possible to reach the venue by own transportation. There will be a special Matera Centre-Cava del Sole shuttle service.

The shuttle service is not an ordinary service and therefore requires the purchase of a ticket (€0.80 per person each way if purchased in advance, €1.50 if purchased onboard). Schedule Departures from Central Station to Cava del Sole: from 19.00 there is a shuttle every 5 minutes with a stop at Villa Longo.

Last departure to the Cava 20.15. Schedule Returns from Cava del Sole to Central Station with a stop at Villa Longo: at the end of the event, until all passengers have been picked up.

At the Cava del Sole there will be shuttles for anyone wishing to return to the Central Station before the end of the concert (all stopping off at Villa Longo).

For disabled people there will be a priority entrance and a specific parking area (maximum 5-seaters), which can only be accessed by vehicles in possession of a valid permit. Any other vehicles transporting disabled people can go as far as the Cava del Sole to drop off the passenger, always exhibiting a valid permit, but they must then park the vehicle in the area near the Cemetery. There will be dedicated support available for disabled visitors.

It is advisable to send an e-mail to passaporto@matera-basilicata2019.it indicating the licence plate of the vehicle to be authorised, name and surname of the driver and disabled passenger.
