After the premiere in Matera, in the setting of the ex Convent of Le Monacelle and with the participation of more than 500 citizens, Purgatory debuts in Ravenna on 25 June.

Purgatory is the second part of the project THE DIVINE COMEDY: 2017-2021 by Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari, commissioned by Ravenna Festival in co-production with Teatro Alighieri, Ravenna Teatro/Teatro delle Albe

Purgatory is the song of new beginnings. Can we start again? Can we still smile, even after our hearts have been crushed, almost obliterated, by anguish? Of course we can. It's like going back to school and learning a new language. We have leafed through the catalogue of horrors, we have peered into the darkness of those evil faces that are ours, now we learn the language of compassion. Blue follows darkness. Before Dante, the penitents are both pupils and masters: they put Dante and the reader and themselves on the path of a new life. Purgatory is the song of 'us', of the choirs that sing their own joy, of ascending together. 'Perceive ye not that we are worms, designed. To form the angelic butterfly, that goes.'
